Google Integrates AI-Powered Shopping into Search and Gemini
Google has unveiled a significant expansion of its AI-driven shopping capabilities, embedding direct retail functionality within its Search and Gemini platforms. The tech giant now enables purchases from major retailers including Walmart, Wayfair, and Etsy through conversational AI interfaces.
The new system, dubbed AI Mode, goes beyond traditional product listings by incorporating Direct Offers—allowing brands to showcase discounted items with instant checkout. When users query Gemini for products like "cheap office chairs," the AI can display items, pricing, and a buy button within the chat interface without requiring external links.
Vidhya Srinivasan, Google's ads and commerce lead, emphasized this represents a fundamental reinvention of digital advertising. The company has partnered with Shopify, Walmart, and Target to build an end-to-end infrastructure handling payments, identity verification, and fulfillment—effectively transforming AI into an autonomous shopping agent.
